Baby Photoshoot

My sister sent us the pictures that she took of Aidan when she was down last Saturday. They look great! You can find them here (and also from the Photos page). I’ve looked at many of the photos Kim has taken on her flickr site and also on her blog, but I’ve never actually got to watch her take any photos. I was so impressed. I figured she had to use some sort of special lighting or something but all she did was put Aidan in front of a window. She didn’t even have to use a flash (which made Delia happy - she was worried about hurting Aidan’s eyes). She’s got a few props - a couple fuzzy pieces of fabric and some crocheted outfits that wrap the babies that she calls “eggs.” I think she’s definitely ready to go pro.

Unfortunately Kim can’t follow us everywhere to chronicle Aidan’s life. So delia and I plan to get a new camera soon. I imagine we’ll just get a point and shoot, neither of us have the talent to require anything more sophisticated. Right now I’m looking at a
Canon PowerShot SD960. It’s pretty cool because it can take HD video as well as pictures. Even with a nice camera I would get your fill of professional looking photos with these pictures. After Delia and I get behind the lens they’ll be plenty of red-eyes and blurred images to go around.

Aidan is born

April 2009 Lily 429
Aidan George Loring was born on April 9th at 9:31 PM (I remembered the time wrong and originally texted everyone with 9:24). He weighed 7 pounds and 1 ounce and was 21.5 inches long. Delia and I spent a couple nights in the hospital before we got to bring him home on Saturday. Since then we have just been feeding him and changing him and trying to sleep when he sleeps. Delia’s parents have been such a big help. They’ve allowed us to focus completely on Aidan and leave the cooking and cleaning to them. I don’t know what we’ll do when they go back to China, I think they’ll need to ease us back in to being adults by gradually letting us do all the things we use to do a few weeks before they leave.

We haven’t got to take many pictures yet, but there really hasn’t been much to take pictures of up to this point. My sister Kim came over on Saturday and took some newborn pictures. When she finishes touching them up I’ll post them. The picture in this post is actually one she took at the hospital. She’s getting pretty good at this photography stuff. You can see some more of her pics
here.

We also took a video of him waking up this morning. You can find it on the
video page. We think it’s really cute the way he stretches his arms up over his head and yawns. He’s been doing that consistently each time he wakes up from his naps for the last couple days.

Dad's new dog

CIMG8626
My Dad recently got a new dog (unfortunately, I can’t remember what kind of dog it is, even though he told me. Maybe he’ll leave a comment and remind me again). He’s been working hard to train him to catch a frisbee. Today he sent me a video clip showing his progress. I’ve added it to the videos page (picture in post links to video page). I’ll say one thing, you can definitely tell the dog loves to play frisbee. It’s all I can do to get my golden retriever to fetch a tennis ball once or twice, and usually he acts like he’s doing me a favor when he does go get it. Plus I’ve got to wrestle the ball away from him on the rare occasions when he does bring it back. In the video you can see Dad instructs “Bo” to drop the frisbee before he’ll throw it again. To me that’s a good idea. Dad says he’s still working to get him to catch it in the air. He’s got to teach him to start running before he throws it so he’ll be in a position to catch it.

Loring family photos

I added several more photographs from my parents’ albums today. I’ve had the albums for over a year now and still haven’t finished scanning them all in. I’m using iPhoto to organize and enhance the photos. It does a pretty good job on most of them, but there’s a few that really need some more work. I have been scanning them in 4 at a time on a flatbed scanner and thinking to myself the whole time, “there’s got to be a scanner made specifically for this type of work.” But I can’t find one. The albums I’m working on now are just the start. Eventually I hope to get all of the photographs my family has taken before the digital age scanned in. One of my favorite pictures has got to be the one of my older sister in her “Stryper” t-shirt.

Now we're ready

CIMG3464
Earlier this week Aidan’s baby furniture was delivered. We decided to get one of those cribs that converts into a toddler bed(kind of like a daybed) and then later into a full-size bed. We also got a dresser/changing table. You can see all the pictures here. We’re planning on replacing the picture above the crib with something a little more “kid-friendly” but Delia and I are not the best at picking that kind of stuff out. Believe it or not, that picture above Aidan’s crib is the only picture we have hanging on a wall in our entire house. We’re really quite boring.
